How To Choose A Sleeping Bag

If you can’t to get a good night’s sleep when you’re camping, you’re likely to wake up feeling tired, moody and craving the comfort of your bed at home. In other words, it can put a downer on your entire trip.

That’s why choosing the right sleeping bag is so important. By providing the perfect level of warmth and comfort, it can help you get the sleep you need to enjoy every moment of your camping trip.

Our buying guide contains all the information you need before choosing a sleeping bag, so you’re guaranteed to pick the perfect one for your outdoor adventure.

Season Rating

Every sleeping bag has a season rating which indicates how suitable it is for the time of year you’re camping. If you want to avoid buying a sleeping bag that is too warm for the summer or too cold for the winter, it’s the most important feature to consider.

1 Season

One-season sleeping bags are the lightest and thinnest type available.

They may not provide sufficient warmth if you’re camping in the UK, but they’re perfect for warmer climates and using indoors.

2 Season

Sleeping bags with a two-season rating are thicker than a one-season sleeping bag. They’re a top choice for the summer months and the warmer months either side of it.

3 Season

Three-season sleeping bags are ideal if you’re camping during early spring or late autumn. They should also provide sufficient warmth during mild, winter weather.

4 Season

Four-season sleeping bags are thicker and heavier than other sleeping bags.

The only time you should ever need to use one is if you’re camping out on higher ground or the temperature is extremely cold outside.

Insulated Filling

The season rating of a sleeping bag is usually determined by its filling.

Sleeping bags designed for warmer weather tend to have a synthetic hollowfibre filling, whereas sleeping bags designed for colder weather to tend to use thick, heavy downing. The amount of filling used also determines how warm it is and this is measured in grams per square metre (GSM).

Our two-season sleeping bags have a 200gsm to 250gsm hollowfibre filling, which makes them a lot cooler to sleep in, whereas our three-seasons sleeping bags have a 300gsm hollowfibre filling, which makes them a lot warmer to sleep in.

Comfort Rating

Every sleeping bag has a comfort rating which is measured in °C and indicates the temperature it’s most comfortable to use in.

They also have a maximum temperature rating and an extreme temperature rating. The closer the temperature gets to the maximum rating, the warmer you’re likely to feel, and the closer it gets to the extreme rating, the colder you’re likely to feel.

Under no circumstances should you use your sleeping bag if the temperature drops below the extreme rating. Doing so could lead to hypothermia or frostbite.

Two-Way Zipper

Sleeping bags are designed to stop heat escaping and keep you warm when the temperature drops at night. It’s a welcome feature on colder nights but can leave you feeling hot and stuffy if you’re camping during the summer.

If your sleeping bag has a two-way zipper, you can easily regulate the temperature inside your sleeping bag. You can leave it zipped up at the top to keep your shoulders snug but open it at the bottom to cool yourself down.

Velcro Zip Fastener

A Velcro fastener is a godsend if you’re having a restless sleep.

It can be fastened over the zipper when your sleeping bag is zipped to stop it coming loose when you’re sleeping. This helps to keep your sleeping bag snug around your shoulders and helps to prevent heat escaping.

Compression Sack

All of our sleeping bags are supplied with a compression sack to easily store and carry with the rest of your camping equipment.

Unlike a regular drawstring bag, it has adjustable straps on the sides, so you can tighten it up and compress it into an ultra-compact size. It’s also made from lightweight water-resistant polyester to keep your sleeping bag dry when it’s stored away.
